Skincare Slang Explained

Skincare Slang Explained

It’s so hard to navigate all of the jargon used in the skincare world these days – Collagen this, Hyaluronic that. But what does it all actually mean? I’m here to break it down for you so next time you’re wandering the web for the next best serum or cream, you know what the hell is going on.

I would say get a pen and paper out and start taking notes, but nobody has time for that, so here’s my super simple take on skincare lingo!

Collagen

If I had a dollar for every time I heard the word Collagen nowadays… To put it simply, Collagen is a protein in your body that makes your hair, nails, skin and bones stronger. You have Collagen to thank for the elasticity and bounce in your skin.

In summary, Collagen = youthful, plump looking skin. Um, yes please!

Hot Tip: when you’re surfing the web for Collagen boosting products, make sure to always look for products that contain Vitamin C, as this is what supports and maintains the almighty Collagen protein in your body. Here’s my favourite Collagen skincare line, in case you’re interested…

Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic Acid is the Queen of quenching your skins thirst. It holds up to 1000 times its weight in water, meaning it holds hydration on the surface of your skin to keep it looking supple, hydrated and glowing!

Hyaluronic Acid = moisturised and glowing. How could you refuse?

My Hyaluronic Acid must have is just a click away – Face Tan Water!

Non-comedogenic

As someone that has suffered with acne and problem skin, this is one I learnt young, and I’m forever grateful. Keeping it plain and simple, non-comedogenic means that a product has been formulated to avoid clogging your pores.

Non-comedogenic = won’t block your pores!

Hot Tip: As a previous acne victim, I feel like I have nailed finding the best non-comedogenic products. Think oil-free moisturisers and always look at ingredients. My two all-time faves are Super Fruit Hydrator, for nourished skin without the excess oil, and Face Tan Water for a facial glow without and impending breakouts.

Retinol

I could go on for hours on this one, but as I said, nobody has time for that. Retinol is an ingredient in skincare that alters the behaviour of skin cells, so they act in a more youthful way - think young, smooth, refined and radiant.

Retinol = reduce the appearance of ageing and uneven texture, by resurfacing and refining, like a chemical exfoliant. There are similar ingredients in nature that aren’t so irritating as Retinol, here’s where we introduce Bakuchiol. This little beauty is a gentler, natural alternative to Retinol and is 100% plant-based.

Look I’m not a dermatologist but this one seems like a no-brainer as a staple in your skincare routine, especially to avoid those dammed crow’s feet… watch this space!
